This is not a publication about vampires. Before reading this book, I had listened to it before. It would have disappointed me if I expected that. This atmospheric, gothic mystery is set in New Orleans. Although the summaries are very rich and the writing sometimes seems a little exaggerated, overall, I found it immersive and easy to follow. The relationship is “drawn together but kept away by circumstances”, but it also has the potential to be a love triangular. However I don’t despise it. Both the primary characters are mixed race, so the tale also discusses race and background. Bonus: A pantaloon is put on a lesbian friend. Some mythological elements are not clear and we don’t get any supernatural web content until the end. The rest of the collection will contain more mythological elements. If you love timeless, extraordinary stories (vampires or werewolves), and are comfortable with a slow, but still rich story, this is the book for you.

Odette Valmont was someone I would love to be friends with. She was enthusiastic and full of humour. Sébastien Saint Germain was like a more polished and also fancy version of Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows and his partnership with Celine was ideal.
