This is a captivating story. This is not the only minority writer this kid reads, but it’s one of many. The story follows Hideki through his final school years to the Blood and Iron student corp. This is a unique record of the anxiety, chaos, and hard decisions that young soldiers had to make in Okinawa. The story combines Japanese and American soldiers in a way that is humanizing and also draws empathy for each. This may be the most gritty middle grade novel I’ve ever reviewed, at least if I consider myself to have reached middle age. It’s not a storybook for adolescents, even though you may have reached the same target readers as these young readers.
This is not a classic, enchanting or diminished tale to make war seem like a grand and glorious adventure. It’s a system for building heroes. It’s a gut.-Tragic, tragic, and unfortunate story about the unimaginable costs of harmful conflict. It’s not gratuitous in it horror, but like a publication that would certainly cause me headaches. However, the author does not hesitate to convey that war is nothing more than that.
Problem. A problem that can be solved.
Yet, it’s not a dark tale just for the sake. It’s a human tale. It’s a nuanced story. A story that may make your heart ache. Ray and Hideki’s experiences, as well as Ray’s representations, reach an essential level beyond the surface area. This is not a journey of simple, surface-area solutions.
Part One’s ending is truly amazing. The sobering, complete victory is incredible.
