Kathryn Hughes publication, and I was certainly mesmerized from the very first page. It was impossible to put it down. It was alarming to see how mentally ill people were treated just a few years ago. I was also shocked at how dedicated individuals could be for no other reason than the fact that they did not fit in or act similarly mentally after a trauma experience. Sarah is a librarian researching Ambersgate in Britain, which was home to around 15,000 clients and inmates until it closed in the 1980s. While her papa may have had some connection to the medical facility in question, his ability is not known.
Sarah’s research in Ambersgate was fascinating to me, and especially when she found the bags. Below is the story of Amy Sullivan. She is a troubled teenager who witnesses the death her mommy. In her mind, she has a “bad” stepmother. Amy was sent by her father to Ambersgate in 1956, when people with mental illness could be institutionalized without permission for ever.
My anger began when Sarah’s discovery was not retold until many phases later. This creates a feeling of imbalance in the story. Amy’s story and Sarah’s story work together in a way I was unable to guess until the end. Imagine yourself as a girl and a lady grieving the loss of your mother, but also mad about the remarriage of her papa, which led to the apparent loss in her affections. How would you feel if those feelings were a constant in your mind? Or maybe your fiancé left you at the modify. Your moms or dads didn’t want to keep you around any longer, so they sent you off to secure you for many years – if not permanently. You suddenly have nothing left of your previous life. You’ll need to wear dustcloths, shower infrequently, and do exactly what you’re told. It would be far better to live in prison today than in an asylum.
